Birdcage I think

Please excuse my ignorance folks I have seen a few posts and recommendations to get rid of the huge cage thing near the instrument cluster, is this what I need to replace it with

Aluminium Upper Fairing Stay Bracket For Kawasaki ZZR600 2005-2008 2006 2007 New | eBay

And once changed other than aesthetics does it make any other difference to the bike

yes, and no difference except maybe a slight weight and aesthetic difference

Stupid people say stupid things on the internet, so be wary of who those people are. If you solicit advice on the internet, just keep in mind 99% of what you'll receive is not based on fact or science-and likely atleast 95% of it is based on bullshit and bravado regurgitated from some other schlub who also did not experience any of what they claim and are also full of shit. If you don't like my bluntness- too bad. I am not here to please you, so move along, your approval is not desired nor is it needed. So before opening your pie hole and adding more stupidity, perhaps sit back, listen, absorb and learn something. You know that saying, it is better to remain silent and thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt!

It's the black bit that goes over the handlebars

I actually really liked it on mine...
It gives you a lot of options for attachment points for stuff, and gives the bike a little more character IMO.

Yes I agree, considering these were a standard part on the original era bikes, adds to the character. Plus as you say, a nice solid mount for items such as GPS or Mobile phone.

Mine had several paint chips, due to age. I removed it, sanded it down then sprayed it matt black. Re-installed, looks like new, subtle and retains the old skool style.
