Home made tank grips!

Hi again...

So I had no tank grips and wanted some. I've had stomp grips before, but they tore up my leathers. Wanted the techspec stuff but they didn't have an 03 shape and wanted 40 quid for a sheet to make my own. I figured if I'm making my own I'll make them out of something cheaper, so went on ebay and found some waterproof non-slip rubber decking/shower room tape, so thought I'd have a go at making some grips.

Step 1 - Get piece of paper, draw shoddy outline:

Step 2 - Get strips of rubber waterproof non-slip tape, stick 2 together with tape

Step 3 - Draw round template

Step 4 - Trial fit paper to bike

Step 5 - Mask round paper. This is the outline to show where the grip will go. Black lines in middle will help line up each strip.

Step 6 - Ready to apply

Step 7 - Trial fit the real thing

Step 8 - Split tape into strips again

And done! Sorta matches the seat too!

Total cost = 6 quid and some masking tape.

Nice work. You are right that is pretty much same as the techspec ones. My brother has them for his zzr and he had to cut to size. Way to be creative and save some $. Also, thanks for sharing your idea. That's what I love about this site.

From what I have seen that stuff would be similar to attaching sandpaper to your tank i.e. not good for leathers!

I assume you mean stuff like this:

SouthStar Skateboard Grip Tape 12" Wide Custom Length | eBay UK

Cheers, extensive testing over the weekend has revealed that they are ok, not too grippy but protecting the tank from scratching

Good idea, Looks ok too.
Does it give ya good grip?

Iv got the tech-spec on my bike & I'm not real happy with the grip.
And there hard on my leathers too, & you say the stomp-grip was hard on yours?
My leathers look like Iv taken sandpaper to em between the knees, In spots.

One more thing, what you have looks nothing like my tech-spec.
The tech-spec is very thick & has a raised herringbone like pattern to it.

I like what you have done here, good idea.

I think they're more like the high fusion grips:

TechSpec USA

(but not 40+ dollars!)

As above, grip is 'ok' - you're not totally locked on like with Stomp grips but at the same time the leathers don't get scuffed up. And it doesn't hurt to ride in jeans!
