What mods are most effective? most unusual mod?

I have heard of some wierd mods and I am wanting to hear what they are and what they do. I just read a post and he had "zip tie mod" as one of his modifications. I am also wanting to hear people say what modifications were affective and not a waste of time, thanks guys.

steering damper is one of the best mods to get, the ziptie mod makes your throttle essentially 1/6 turn versus 1/4 turn from factory which makes it easier on your wrists. if you have an '05+ the jumper mod to set the bike to the factory settings nets some good gains.

save your money and buy good gear and track, that'll make you faster than any other mod you could do

The zip tie mod is only for the hardcore, and the alternative to the zip tie mod is even better!

+1

Best mod you can do is learn to ride it better.

After that....

-1/+2 in the final drive. Lose top end speed but gain a bunch of mid range torque

Best FREE mod... get your suspension set up for your weight.

There are more. but I like the "save your money and buy gear and track day tickets" more.

OP is asking about modifications to the motorcycle, not for advice. Motorcycle gear and track days are not modifications. Gear is a good/smart practice, and track days are play time (substitution for being a jackass on the street).

Most effective mod is changing your gearing, smaller sprocket up front, bigger one out back. You'll get the most bang for your buck that way.

Common mods:

Performance:

--slip-on exhaust
--high flow air filters (K&N, BMC)
--Power Commander/Juice Box (FI bikes) or Jet Kit (carb'd bikes)
--sprockets

Costmetic:

--polished/chrome parts
--carbon fiber parts
--extended swingarms (on street bikes)
--paint jobs
--underbody lighting

Convenience/comfort:

--adjustable levers
--comfortable grips
--aftermarket rearsets

Without going into the engine itself, the previously mentioned performance mods are not going to yield significant power gains. You can get decent gains from a full exhaust, air filter, fuel mapping, and timing advancement, but don't expect to be able to run with a stock liter bike in a straight line.

Unusual mods I guess I would say are things that I've done with my ZZR, which is take parts from other bikes and fit them to yours (suspension, tail section, braking, etc). I did it for performance gain (suspension and braking) and cosmetic reasons (tail section).
BlueWidowRdr and Gulfstream1 like this.

1. Invest in your riding abilities and safety (classes, gear, etc)

2. Upgrade brakes (lines, M/C, pads, etc)

3. Comfort (seat, levers, windscreen, etc)

4. Performance (Exhaust, fuel management, etc)

5 Personal touches (stickers, paint jobs, chrome, etc)

Well... we ALL did actually give him some suggestions other than telling him to go hit a track day. And technically... by his "asking about modifications" he in fact did "ask for advice" on mods. (sorry... just being a dick)

But seriously Larry... we all answered the post with a mod or two and another thing that, yes, may have been off topic. (However... I invested in the ability to ride LONG before I started pouring money into the bottomless pit I call "motorcycle addiction") - Just sayin'!

what do you mean by steering damper? what is the modification to the rearsets? I have to figure out what the rearsets even are...I enjoy the cheap or free modifications. I only bought my 00-02 zx6r for $740 cuz it was titled as a 94 zx6e. I was so excited when I found out it had a new motor, then I realized the whole bike including the frame was a J model. I appreciate any tips, won't be doing track days anytime soon. I may do the zip tie thing one day. I want to make the seat more comfortable so I took away some pad to drop me lower. As you can tell that made the ride worse, but I am less up in the air. I am normal height, 5' 9", but bike still feels a hair too tall. Bike already had 530 chain and -1/+2 mod done. I am switching back to stock cuz I cruise most of the time until I get more practice, thanks everyone...

your rearsets are what you put your feet on. and by modifying they mean buy aftermarket ones that are adjustable.
