When I ride my bike fast, it feels like it pulls pretty good around 8-9k rpm. I have a carbureted J1 (2000 zx6r) so I am wondering if I really have a flat spot or a lean condition during midrange. I am wondering if I need to richen needle clip. Do you know what stock clip setting is? Do you know if it comes with shim?
.... No you're fine Joe.
All engines have a curve in power. A bike doesnt make full power all the time. that is probably where you're bike is making a decent chunk of it's power
hah he was asking a question about the bike. saying it pulls hard at a certain rpm. he acted as if it could be bad. so i was asking him if he knew what a powerband is. perhaps he didnt know bikes had one. so my question was simply seeing if he knew what a powerband was. because the pull that he feels is the powerband. many people have heard of a "powerband" but don't necessarily know what it means.
Do you see where the green band starts on the tach? That's where you're peak HP and torque start to come on. That's why your bike pulls harder at that RPM.
I hope you guys are joking, I have heard of powerband, but I wish there was a way to ensure my midrange was where it is supposed to be. I have not even got an answer to where the stock clip setting is. I think the kid before me did not know what he was doing, he had it on the top clip (leanest setting) and had shims on it. He must of had it backwards. I find it interesting that the tach says where powerband is. I am not even sure whether the bike comes with the shim or not. thanks everyone.
Iv put 43,000 miles on my J model's motor.
It has a couple of high spots in the powerband,
The first real hard hit is @ 9,000rpm & an even harder hit @ 11,000rpm.
It pulls smooth up to 7000 where it begins to make real power,
But as I said the first hard hit is @ 9,000.
To help your motor you need to check that the carbs are properly set.
Check that the mix screws are between 3 & 3 1/4 out.
Then sync them. Now your bike is going to run as it should, You will feel the difference.
Hicky, do you do this everywhere you go? are we going to have to takeaway your keys.??? LOL
Okay, I rode it today and I noticed the power band at 7k rpm. It really pulls nice there, but it feels slow to take off. If I am in like 4k and then give it heck, it is really slow to get going. I wanted to start at stock, but nobody has told me what their clip is at in their needle jet or jet needle, which ever one it is. When you take the top off the carbs, you pull out the diaphragm and the needle with a clip on it. It is adjustable and mine has a washer that I assume are "shims". I have done research and asked questions and nobody has told me what stock was or even if stock has shims?! thanks everyone.
Well well, Now I know what this clip is, Its to bad I did not see this thread
Saturday cuss I just so happen to have replaced a tinny O-ring in the top of carb # 4,
I even had that spring & diaphragm out, I don't recall seeing any clip.
I would have gladly looked for ya though.
Say you had it @4k? Well it depends on what gear your in.
Take it to 4k in 1st & whack it open.
I feel my bike pull nice at 7k, I just wish I knew where stock clip was at, book doesn't tell me. Kinda easy to tell if oldninjadude ever looked at his carburetor bike. Thanks for that info powergroove
Is that sarcasm? Or just plain ungratefulness?
Iv tried to help ya all I can. But its proly safe to say that ends now.
Oh & yeah Iv had my carbs off several times & my bikes running very well.
One thing you'll need to remember... this is a 600. the bulk of it's horsepower is over 8000rpms. ALL 600's have little to no pull at 4000 rpms. If you want pull at 4k. Get a liter bike. That is what 600's do... they need to spin up to get the cams kicking ass and the crankshaft spinning to generate that power.
I'm not sure about the needles and jetting. But it sounds to me like you've got nothing more than a 600cc sport bike. It doesn't HAVE much power at 4k.
I ride an '09. I can tell you this... until I re-geared the thing I couldn't pull anything until 8000. Now I've got a bit more power at around 6k... but still not in the "happy zone" until at least 9k or higher.
