2013 ZX6R 636 Choppy Throttle Issues!

Hi all,

I have had my 2013 ZX6R 636 ABS for 8 months or so and itís a great bike but ever since I got it I have noticed that it has a choppy throttle response - it is like an on/off switch which is really bugging me! Itís especially annoying if you are riding through a chicane and come off / on the throttle Ė there is a lag and then bam the throttle comes on and its really hard to be smooth!!! Once the throttle is applied is it really smooth and has great fuelling throughout the rev range.

Initially I found that the throttle free play was way out from the factory so I took all the slop out so it has 2mm free play and its better but still not great.

I have also modified the bike quite a bit since buying it and it has a PCV with a custom map, leo vince can and decat, and the kleen air system has been removed but still it has the same issue. I have taken the bike back to the tuner (who is well respected and tuned many of my bikes in the past - all were great) 3 times for them to look at but they just canít get rid of the on / off throttle response. The tuner has said it is likely due to Kawasaki swapping to fly by wire for this yearís bike or it only have 4 injectors as opposed to the 8 from last years model. I also tried the R6 throttle mod on it to try and take some of the laggy feel out of the throttle response but it made it even more abrupt!

I still have my 2010 ZX6R and this NEVER had the same issue even from new and that is now heavily modified track only bike but still has perfect throttle response!

Iím wondering if anyone else has this issue or if its maybe a bad ECU map or something?

Its bugging me so much that Iím thinking of changing it for a GSXR 750 which is a shame as I love every other bit of the bike and am a die hard Kawasaki fan!

Is this "on/off" you describe like a lag in throttle response?

For instance you try and crank the throttle and the response is not immediate?

Trying to get a better idea of what you mean here.

Hiya,

Yeah I'd describe lag in throttle response and theres nothing then it cuts in making it jerky.

Check your chain slack. A chain that is too loose will cause this as well.

Sorry should have said - chain slack is good and bang on 30mm (which is where I prefer it)

I've noticed a little sloppiness in the throttle as well, nothing that bugs me to much. You can feel a little play in the throttle even when its not running, I think thats geared towards street use so people are less likely to give it too much throttle on the first pull.

I have modded the throttle and changed the gearing on my 636. This has made the bike more sensitive to any inputs made to the throttle. This has made me more smooth on mid corner adjustments. If I do come off the throttle completly in a first gear turn, it does upset the bike so I try not to do that. I hope you get things sorted out and good luck with the bike.

There has been a known problem with the 2013 having cold/warm start issues. These issues stem around a faulty board. I beleive you are not far off, on suggesting that the ECU is the source which is causing your abrupt throttle response. Have you attempted to contact your dealer from which you purchased the bike from?

I did contact the main dealer I purchased the bike from and my nearest kawasaki dealer but they are all suggesting that because my bike is modified with the Power commander V, exhaust etc it could be causing the issue. It seems they are trying to play the blame game and not accepting any responsibility....it's a bit of nightmare!

If you added the PCV, you did not tune the ride on the dyno to adjust things? On my 2nd gen 10r, hated the same issues stock, added the PC3, tuned it on the dyno. Love life with a good throttle response.

Stable rides: I love stable rides

Hiya,

Yep as i said in my original post the bike has a custom tune which was carried out by my local tuner on the dyno and he has tried to tweak it since to iron this out but got to the limits of the PCV. He has fitted loads of Power Commanders / Bazzaz units to several of my previous bikes in the past and all of the tunes have been great. He is a very experienced tuner and runs a couple of small race teams in the UK so I trust his work.

He did mention that the ECU could be remapped but it would cost more money and their are no guarantees. I'm not really happy messing about with the ECU as if I sell the bike I can just remove the Power Commander.

Its a strange one and like I say my older ZX6R doesnt have the issue and I also had a 2011 ZX10R last year which was fine as well.

Its a bit of a bummer....

My bike is stock except for sliders and FE. It does does something similar to what your describing. Like you twist the throttle slowly and then there is a split second pause before boom, your off? Slow low roll on like leaving a stoplight?Haven't noticed anything if I'm cruising and opening it further. Only happens if I had the throttle closed? I'm new to riding and this is my first bike. I honestly just thought that was the way it was. My Ecu has already been replaced for the starting issues.

Yep that's what it's like - a delay when rolling on - especially annoying when you are starting to roll on after turning the bike when cornering - you get more lean than you want as it takes time before your throttle input to register and when it does it's abrupt so it can upset the bike.....

Hiya,

How did you modify the throttle? I tried the r6 throttle tube mod on the 636 but it made the input even more abrupt so I went back to stock.

I changed the gearing on my 2010 to -1 on the front and it was perfect. what did you go for on the 636? I'm reluctant to alter the gearing due to it being more of a road bike but if it makes it better then maybe it's worth it!
