ZX6R.com Member Demographics

Some people collect stamps. Other people enjoy fine wine.

Then there are those that like to see patterns in numbers, graphical representations of data, and the deconstruction of systems. I'm one of those guys.

Pulling all of the member data from 843 pages took some time, I used a combination of Apple Automator, grep and awk in the bash shell, and VBA for Excel. Some of the graphs come from MiniTab or Apple Numbers. Now on to the data!

Here's where we are all from:

EDIT: UPDATED NUMBERS 1/14/2014

The breakdown is as follows:

United States 10550
United Kingdom 740
Canada 269
Australia 140

Other 414
Total 12140

Several caveats: I cleaned some of the data by hand. If you had a US City and State listed but no country I counted you as a US member. If you had Wales, Scotland, England, or Northern Ireland I have you counted as UK. If I couldn't infer the country from other data then I didn't count you.

On average every member posts .43 times per week. This was calculated by subtracting the date I collected the data from each individual user's join date for the number of days they have been members, and then dividing the number of posts by the number of days to get posts per day. Divide that by seven and you get posts-per-week. SSGSXR ZX6R was the most prolific poster with over 90 posts per week. 5,871 registered members have never posted since joining.

As you can see, that's almost half.

I'll post some more graphs and stats once I clean up the dataset a little more. Does anyone want to see anything in particular? If so it would have to be something from the member list or calculated from what is on there.

Maybe some of those lurkers are one-time posters from the GSX-R Forum, who come here only to voice protest on the "post a squid" thread? Maybe another pie slice is needed to account for that, so that the honest lurker doesn't have to be in the same category as a squid-apologist?

Maybe 2-3 hours from start to finish once I got the Automator script working right. That isn't counting the time Automator churned through each member page, striped the text, and dumped it all into one file. From there you just cut and paste the entire thing into Excel, write some VBA code to loop through and clean out the lines that don't have any member data. In the case of the member page I only passed lines of text that had a "-" in them; every member has a join date with a hyphen. This method picked up a few stray lines of text but it was nothing doing cleaning them out. From there I filtered the Country column for blanks and filled in the ones that had city or state data that I could use to infer the country. That was manual and took an additional 10-15 minutes or so.

They are all zero-post members. Nil. Zilch. Nada. I was going to do a histogram of posts-per-week and these lurkers made for an ugly graph. I'll filter them out and then see what it looks like.

Some lurkers are valid. They just collect information and look for solutions to problems. A guy can just about find all the information they need.about their bike etc. Without asking a single question!

This is probably true. I lurked this site for a while when I was researching what kind of bike I wanted to buy. I lurked as a guest though, think I joined the site and started posting the day I brought her home.

Do-able but takes some manual entry as people don't enter their city or state in a consistent format under "location"
