Ear plugs???

Hello all,

I have heard a few different ideas about using ear plugs when riding. Some say they will protect your hearing on long runs from wind noise (obviously will) and others have told me that it is dangerous to ride with ear plugs in as you can't hear what is going on around you (which also makes sense). Now I can see this from both sides but what do you all think? Are there bikers on here that wear ear protection when riding? I think I might give it a try as most of my riding is country roads so 60+ MPH with a lot of Scottish wind. Also as a side note I was looking through the list of service manuals on here and couldn't figure out which one is for my bike, it's a 2000 zx6r..... can someone post a link to the right one or tell me the name of the one which corresponds to my bike please?

Cheers in advance! :

Got some custom molded plugs from the Long Beach MC convention a few months back ($60). They work like a charm. Brings down the "big noises" but you can still hear the general traffic nuances. For me it turns down the volume on the exhaust and wind on the longer freeway rides. For local rides, I usually rock music through ear buds.

What type/brand of ear plugs do you use?

I usually have noise canceling ear buds playing low volume music. Works great, the one time I did not use them on a long ride I swear it sounded like I was under water for 3 days

I don't normally wear them on the street. Around here it's rare to run more than 60 MPH. Even then it isn't for long. On the track or on my dirtbike I always wear them. Protects my hearing (something I would strongly urge younger riders to do) and allows me to better focus on my riding.

If anyone has suggestions for custom molded ones, I love to know about them.

I don't often wear ear plugs, but do sometimes on longer rides. I honestly find that the ear plugs don't end up blocking out other sounds any more than the wind noise already does

Also, this is the service manual you'll want - it's titled wrong (should be 2000-2002 ZX6R and 2005-2008 ZZR600), but it's the right one. Cheers :

Thanks for that link mate, I'll get it downloaded tonight. I think I'll definitely try some ear plugs, not sure what type to go for though.

I would start by just going with something simple and cheap to see if you're going to like the noise reduction. If you do, then I would HIGHLY recommend heading to an audiologist and getting some custom ones made - way more comfortable and easy to customize the amount of noise reduction.

Hearing loss usually happens slowly over time. I wear ear plugs when I ride.

I use these

Easy peasy.

I started wearing ear plugs a couple months ago. I would definitely recommend wearing them especially for long and/or freeway riding. The amount of reduced wind noise is very noticeable and I find I have much better concentration.

As a comparison riding at 100km p/hr with earplugs still has much less wind noise than riding at 60km p/hr without them.

How did you get custom molded plugs for $60? Did you go to an audiologist or some other kind of place? Everywhere I've looked it's about double that (or more)
