I've got an 04' and there is a cable that attaches to the front sprocket cover. i was told that is where it gets its speed reading. I changed front and rear sprockets(-1, +2) and it threw the speedo way off. put the factory size back on and and its still a little off. At 60 the speedo says 70.

It reads on the rear wheel. Like Miller said, it's from the speedo sensor in the sprocket cover housing. Doesn't matter where your speedo reads from, changing a sprocket will always throw it off.

unless its from the front tire.

funny thing is, i just changed my front sprocket and pinched the speedo sensor wires.

didnt think anything of it cause i just soldered it back together.
but it didnt work.

it doesnt run off volts, its with Herts.

so if you get bare wire or damage it at all, NEW SPEED SENSOR.

A speedo healer would fix your problems with the speedo being off. It will also make the odometer accurate as well.

check out sprocketcenter.com , they have a chart that you can work out new speeds.
I went down one in the front and I think it reads about 8 kms faster at 100.
