Strange starting problem in the canyons

Took out betsy to stretch her legs. Riding with some buddies for about an hour and half and we stopped for a second to figure out where we would go. Shut the bike off, maybe 45 seconds later tried to start it. Started then died out, tried two more times. Started then died out. Tried fourth time and tried to rev it real quick no rev just died out. Tried twice in neutral and revving it at the same time. Last try it stayed on and revved finally......

Occasionally it will take a second try to start it and keep it idling but normally once is enough.

Cold start it idles really low for a minute then jumps up to cold start idle rpm pretty much every morning.

Going to clean the switch tonight but I thought I was going to be stranded. Any ideas? Riding around the rest of the day starts and idles no problem first time.

I remember the 2013s had starting issues when they first came out.

I had an issue like that with my 2013. If the engine was hot, like 200+ degrees, the bike would not want to start. It was stupid having to rev my bike while pushing the starter when at the gas station or in the canyons. My bike is a cali model so I thought it might be the extra emissions stuff we have. Bypassed all that and still had the problem. Next I tried getting my ecu replaced by my local dealer, but they wanted way too much money. There was never an official recall, but some people had luck getting Kawasaki to replace the ecu for free under warranty, but I bought my bike used so I was SOL. I ended up buying a used cali model ecu on ebay, swapped it out and now the bike starts the first time, every time. If you pull your ecu the part number you probably have is 21175-0812 112100-9872. You want 21175-0812 112100-9874.

Edit: Forgot to mention I had the low idle, slow start when the bike was "cold" like you have. The ecu swap fixed that too.

This is exactly what's going on. Temp read 225 and wouldn't start. I will have to see what ecu I have, it's a pain in the butt to check it with my damper.

Do you have abs ecu?

No, I don't have the ABS model bike. However, I don't think the ecu affects the abs though. The ecu part number should be the same for both bikes. You can go on Kawasaki Parthouse and check to see if they're the same part number.

BTW, the "112100-9872" secondary part of the part number is not advertised online. I found the new version "112100-9874" by looking at a picture of the actual ECU I would be buying on ebay.

So glad I never had any of the starting issues on my 2013. Been a real pain for some owners.

Curious, what's your ecu part number?

Did you swap spark plugs? I got about 20k mi on mine and what I've found is the following:

For start up issues:
1) Check your ECU for warranty/recall(2013 owners only
2) Check/Swap your spark plugs. I started having issues starting at 9k-10K but the SM calls for spark plug replacement at 7500.
3) Check/Swap battery. I killed my battery leaving the bike on before vacation. $77 mistake Ill never do again. But I was amazed to see how much brighter the red engine light was and how quickly she cranked over.

ECU came in today, I was going to just swap it out but I will spend some time and try and get some go pro footage of what's happening first.

So this guy made a great video to show an example of what happens at cold start
so I decided not to make another one.

Spent about 20 min swapping ecus. I was really lazy and didn't remove everything I was supposed to so it was harder then it should have been.

New one on the right old one on the left. It immediately fixed the cold start funkyness. I'm sure it also fixed the other starting issues but I haven't ridden out yet to get it hot enough to test it.

Now I just need to decide if I want to sell the old ecu or flash it so I have a race ecu and stock one lol.

Lol! It still works though. I could get it flashed and fixed and also see if I can get more power out of it
