I would say "simple-looking" rather than "straight". Those are all highly engineered exhausts by some of the best exhaust manufacturers. They are more than just "straight" pipes even though they look like it and they're loud, because there isn't much muffling to them.
Straight as in NO muffler, race cars have exhausts they spend a long time getting all the pipes to be the same length and bends to have equal back pressure on all cylinders.
If you do that, then have fun. Be sure the places your driving don't have noise ordinances.
My can has no baffles but is much quieter than a exhaust with no can.
A lot of engineering goes into the shape/ design of race exhausts. It's not as simple as the straightest, shortest way through.
Take for example the classic brilliant Britten V1000. It most definetely does not have a streight through design as those twists and turns tune the powerband response.
MotoGP and SBK machines are constantly making changes to their exhausts designs as well. I remember a few years back aftermarket exhaust companies were marketing 2stroke motogp style cans that are completely irrelevant today.
One of the most original, out of the box engineering companies ever to hit the motorcycle industry. Gone far too soon. So many clean sheet thoughts expressed in carbon and metal, which resulted in measurable improvements in performance.
I'd love to see someone build a kit to convert a current gen vee twin into something similar. Heck, even the modern racing narrow angle vee fours could probably be set up in a similar fashion.
I needed advice/suggestion as I have no exhaust right now and would like to my local exhaust shop for them to fabricate a link pipe for me. Doing so, I don't have a way to get the motorcycle there other than riding it. The best I can do before all that is a S bend pipe that I would connect to the headers and go to the shop.
You can get an OEm pipe off eBay inexpensively. Wouldn't want to get ticket on the way to the shop. You'd pay more for a ticket than for a temp replacement :O
Ironically there's one (not going) just down the road from my work-place that I can visit during my lunch break. Amazing machines...I think three now call USA their home.
Guy Martin was lucky enough to ride one when he came through here two years ago. Rode it at Manfeild (my local track) and had to follow special instructions since it's the last one running in the world. You'll also notice his helmet follows the Britten colour scheme (pink/blue) and has the four stars (Southern Cross) of New Zealand. The bike is really weird to ride since it won't rise under acceleration or dive under brakes. We just about lost half of them in the Christchurch earthquakes. So lucky that someone remembered to go in a fish them out even though the place was red-zoned and no one was meant to go there. I love the fact that they never had head-gaskets. The block was decked so smooth that they weren't needed. Engineering marvel even today. But Kiwis have always been great innovators. We split the atom, built a plane before the Wright Brothers, the first country to retain the America's Cup and just about took out Oracle (until they cheated) in the big cats, first to summit Everest, we're on our way to have our own space programme, designed the Martin jet-pack, Burt Munro and other legends...yeah we're a cool bunch.
I posted some pictures from the local Museum a few years ago. Might go there at lunch one day this week and grab some more pics for you all to drool over...
So I spent my lunch break grabbing these. This is the #2 bike (used for development). I have a ton of shots so if anyone wants close-ups of bits let me know. I spent a full half hour going over the bike.
