Ninja 300 vs R3?

Specifically for race use. Pro's and con's of each?

I may be able to afford to race one of these tiny bikes this year so am considering options.

I'd probably go Yamaha just for the slight better power. I think it has better brakes too. And as far as the small bikes... from what I've read the Honda actually had the best all around suspension. I couldn't see that considering they're so cushy... but I haven't ridden all of them either.

I think the R3 is a great bike. Can't knock the lil' Ninja either though. Tough choice!

There was a long discussion on trackday junkies on FB about this. Essentially with zero experiece with either pick one and make it work for you. I thought the r3 would be the better bike because of power, but the argument against it is the ninja revs higher and makes more power ip top.

Make sure which ever bike is legal where you want to race it. I know TPM did not allow R3s in their own particular race series because the R3 is bigger than 300cc (It might also have to do with TPM being sponsored by Kawasaki).

I don't think there's any doubt that the R3 has more power.

Ninja 300: It's green

R3: It has fewer syllables in the name.

Do it!!! They're so fun.

I think both of those are really close in performance. You can't go wrong with either. The CBR500 (which i have for sale ), is heavier but also has about 4-5 hp more than the other two. They can all be competitive, but it seems like you can find more parts for the 300 and the R3 generally.

I have ridden ninja 300s on the track multiple times and was not impressed but in all fairness they were pretty much stock. I imagine in race trim they feel more like my 500. The R3....we will see. I'll let you know my opinion when I ride it this year

Negligible. From all the dyno runs I've seen from various sources, the R3 is maybe 1 hp more.

I am thinking about the same (for racing F3). Used to have a 300 so I'm kind of partial and I know absolutely zero about ordering Yamaha parts (getting an R6 throttle was bad enough down here). The local Yamaha dealer sucks.

The ninja 300 is better because it's made by kawasaki and I have one. . There are plenty of spare parts for it. . . and more racers are using the ninja 300 in the upcoming world supersport 300 races. There has to be a good reason for that :

Thanks dude. I knew you would come through. Seriously though, there seems to be a ton of parts out for the R3...

Edit: Devil's advocate - no love for the RC390? I hate orange things (especially KTM underwear) but I hear they put out a bit of power. But reliability seems to be an issue.

Search for KTM 390 blown engine and you'll get the answer

Recalls Coming for the Yamaha YZF-R3 - Asphalt & Rubber
It might be worth getting the ninja 300 as it has had a bit more time to get the bugs worked out.
After seeing a major recall on the R1 and now this for the new R3, I am leaning towards the kawi if I ever go down the lightweight rabbit hole.

The 300 has been out forever. I had one four years ago (when they first came out - mine was actually the first in the country). No issues apart from a stretched chain and that was due to some dumbass who adjusted it too tightly (me). Even back then I loved giving the bigger bikes a scare through the esses. Can't wait to do that again. They are so much fun, wringing the nuts out them...me and a mate are going to buy a pair (he's a Kawasaki/Honda guy) over winter and get them sorted.

I Ride: Lots of them...
Look at last weekends results from Chuckwalla, Gray and his KTM up front followed by a long line of R3's... If your racing an R3 register with BluCru and get $$$ my boy Madama made a bunch of money last month and this month... Almost paid the initial purchase of the bike off already this year!

The 300 has been around since 2013 whereas the R3 only since 2015 so naturally there should be more parts available for the 300, however there are a surprisingly good amount of options for the R3 already. I'm looking at race bodywork now and I have a list of like 8 options for brands! That's pretty damn good for a 2-year old model.

Recalls are not a big deal. Pressure plate bearing and oil pump. Yes, do those right away if you get an R3. I just did mine last week. It took more time to load up the bike and drop it off than it did to do the work. Obviously it has to be done at the dealer if you want it for free, otherwise you can buy the new parts and do it yourself in probably less than an hour. Supposedly there's a new recall on a tank bracket and ignition switch, but hasn't come to the US yet. They don't seem to be a big deal so I won't bother with that.

The RC390 would be a great option....if they don't blow up. Rumor is the new ones, starting from 2017 have been updated. So unless you want to buy a brand new one, I would steer clear of the RC390's. It's unfortunate because they're the lightest one out of those options and seem to be a bit more "race-ready" than the others.

Like others mentioned...there's a reason there are so many Yamahas and Kawis in the new WSS 300 class. Those 2 are the bikes to have. I raced in MRA in their Production Cup class which has everything from 250s to 500s and they have like 30+ bikes on the grid. The bike to have seemed to be the R3 when I was there. There was a really fast guy on an RC390, who probably lost his engine by now, and another fast guy on a 500 (which used to be Jason Madama's bike), but the rest were on R3's.

Good call on the Blu Cru deal...I should sign up for that. If nothing else I think I can use the initial 50 bucks they give you...after that I doubt I'll get anything lol. I think they only pay out at certain tracks, none of which are where I'll be racing at.
