What happened before the tear down:

Removed rear pegs and rear turn signals
New Metzeler M5 Rear Tire
Installed integrated smoked tail light
Installed flush front smoked turn signals
Dual Headlight Mod with New H4 bulbs (JOKER’s Mod)
Zero Gravity Double Bubble Windscreen
New amateur black paint job
New Stock Gas Cap (flat black)
New Stock Bar Ends and Oil Cap
Vortex Sprocket and RK Chain (520)
Cheap Frame Sliders and Vortex Slider Spools (rear)
New NGK Spark Plugs
New AGM (Glass Pack) Battery
Reupolstered the seat with boat vinyl (black carbon fiber look)
TST License Plate Bracket

What’s happening now:

The frame, swing arm, and wheels (wheels may get anodized) are getting powder coated black (low gloss "Bike Black")
Mammoth Motorsports is giving the engine a tune up (checking the valves, etc.)

What will happen when I get the engine, frame, swing arm, and wheels back:

Assembly
Yosh RS5 “full” system w/carbon fiber (non-slip on style) can (reusing stock mid pipe and black header wrapping)
Power Commander III (DYNO tune from MM) w/a used LCD Screen from this forum
Front Forks (Ryan’s) w/Ohlins Valve Kit, Sprung for my weight, & TiN coated lowers
Ohlins Steering Damper (used from a salvage yard)
Rear Shock ReValved (Race Tech Gold Valve Kit) and ReSprung (Race Tech)
Suspension will be tuned by MM
“ReFreshed” Rotors (sand blasted and a new cross hatch laid down via MM’s lathe)
New EBC Sintered Brake Pads (Front and Rear)
New HEL Lines – White w/black SS banjos – Race Style
New “cheap” BikeZ Fairing off Ebay (they included match paint for the tank front tire hugger)
Renthal or JT Sprocket with an EK Chain
New Vortex Adjustable Rear Sets (Black)
New Vortex Brake Lever (haven’t gotten around to buying a new clutch lever yet, Vortex doesn’t make the shorty clutch lever any more. May go with a Vortex V3 Clutch Lever.)
Jumper Mod
(Debating) KLEEN Air Mod
Short Velocity Stacks Mod

What will happen in FEB/MAR:

2007 ZX6R Nissin Caliper Swap
New Pads for the Nissin Calipers
Taking MY old forks and “refreshing” them
-Ohlins Internals via a friend of a friend “Ohlins rep”
-Resprung for my weight
-Black Anodized Fork Tubes
-Black Powder Coated caliper mounts
-May try to call in a favor to have my lowers coated with something. Frustrating that I do chemical deposition just not the kind suited for coating my lowers.

I will post progress shots and updates as I progress. A couple folks on here follow me on Instagram so they know I'm a picture whore when it comes to my bike.

gonna look sweet.
I sure hope so! I've got quite a bit of change into her so far... Lol

Nice,I like the white lines.

I'm interested to see your paint scheme and colours

Thanks. Well for track she'll look a little silly. White tank with flat black race skins and tail (attack performance)... For street, she'll sport cheap BikeZ fairings. She'll be all white with black rear sets, and powder coated black frame, swing arm, and wheels. After march, she'll have black anodized fork tubes and 07 black Nissin calipers. It's a project. Aka my money pit of love. Lol.

Someone on IG asked for a pic of all my parts so far... Plus I know how much y'all love pictures. ;)

Shout out to Ryan for the forks.

Huh. Ya I hate the fat tire too BUT the white pieces are interesting. Makes me want to do some of the "little bits" white now. Thanks smokey. I think you've changed my mind on a few things. Calipers, caliper mounts white. Maybe even the tripple tree? And maybe the engine covers? I'll have to look at those pics again. But it would def add some extra pop. Look less plain I guess. You don't think white brake lines on white calipers would be too much?

#12 ·
No I think it could look cool, but honestly you should try and get it photoshopped to be sure. But with white triples it could look pretty clean.

Not sure if you picked up levers yet but Pazzo has some special edition white shorties that would work nicely too. I think I saw them on Motomummy

I picked up a shorty brake lever (black) from Vortex but I may switch those out for something else. I can't find a matching clutch lever... And now I'm thinking I may go with white. I've never checked out Motomummy, I'll have to look into that. I usually buy from Bike Bandit or Motorcycle Superstore or 58cycles... Who Evers cheaper. Lol

Valve Adjustment Done. They were in fact out of spec (should have figured. I don't know how the PO treated the bike, and I tend to ride Skaggs mostly in 2 and high RPM's. Skaggs is basically an outdoor track here in Sonoma County)... 270 bucks for the repair bill. *yes I'm aware I could have done it myself and saved the money, but I have my reasons for letting MM do the work*

They are also banging out the barings and sending the frame/swing arm out for powder. They will *try to save the barings ("just buy new bro"... trying to save money when and where I can) but if they can't, new barings it is. Quote for Powder AND barings work = 600.

My 07 Black Nissin Calipers should be here 01/17/13. I will post pics when I get them.

Thus is my update.

$600 include labor?

#16 ·
400 for the powder (which is high, but I trust them not to spray where they aren't suposed to. I could have saved 100-150 bucks by going with someone further north, but I don't trust their work), another 100-200 bucks for knocking the barings out, delivery, and putting them back in or replacing them. 600 is on the high side (and a rough estimate, hopefully it will cost less, not more. "no more than 600"). But yes, powder, labor, all included. I'm paying to have it "done right the first time". They do sport bikes all the time.

#17 ·
dam thats high for having them knock the bearings out , that include new ones? Id def get new ones for peace of mind.

Ya, I've been thinking that too. IDK if they can even save them. We will see... but I think you're right, new is way better. Esp since I'm doing all this stuff to it. Pretty sure their shop rate is 80 bucks an hour. And it's just a rough estimate. I'm hoping it'll be more around the 500 range, but it's in their hands now. I'll post when they give me the final bill. Let's hope they don't rape me. lol. :glare:

07 Nissin Calipers. These will go on after I "refresh" my old forks while riding my new (used) ones I got from Ryan. These 07 calipers and the lower mounting points on the forks will get powder coated white. Smokey suggested it and I think I like the idea of doing *some* things white to match the new white fairing set I have.

Almost there. Some more smoothing. But I was right not to use any fiber, just putty and some "primer-putty in one" and it was good.

Also, stopped by the shop today... My rotors weren't done (but beggars can't be choosers. That's free shit that's gettin done. No complaints here.)... The frame and the swing arm should be back from powder next week.

First coat of primer over some putty and primer putty in one. I'll do a super fine sand tomorrow morning. Then lay another coat of primer. Buff. Then...

I may borrow a sprayer and try my hand at painting. :-/ We'll see how that turns out. I don't normally paint... I pay others. But he has all the gear and offered. I just gotta buy paint and build a ghetto paint booth in the garage.

I knew I recognized the name! It's _Graham_ from IG man! The build looks awesome! I need to make a build thread myself, now that I have a computer!

What's up dude?!?! Thanks man! You should! Kinda fun to put it all centralized in one place. Let me know if you start one and I'll subscribe to it. Cheers man!

Got my anodizing quote:

Wheels - 125 each (includes strip)
Triple Tree - 55 (includes clean/strip)
Forks - "hard anodized" - 75 each (not sure if it includes strip...)

Getting them done at Milner's Anodizing in Santa Rosa. The company I work for uses them. They will be Type 2, anodized black. I will get the triple tree done first, the wheels second, and the forks last. I will post pics after they get done. Cheers!

Ps. Anodizing the wheels is cheaper than powder coating, and saves weight.

Kawi parts house I believe. But I've never used them before. They haven't arrived yet. Should be here 02/05-02/07.

Bearing and Air Box Cleaning

I used an old brownie tin I cleaned out, WD40, toothbrush and shop towels. I made a back splash out of shop towels when spraying the WD40 and then used those towels to clean with.

Before...

During and after...

3 yellow jackets and some various bugs... I have a strict no passenger rule. ;) :p

My local shop is gonna let me bead blast my own rims tomorrow. I'll snap a pic when I get raw aluminum.

So my local shop offered to let me do some work on my wheels at their shop. Sounds crazy right? Well I said yes. I get off work and head over there. I'd like to start by saying it's like starting at a new shop. You don't know where anything is or goes and you hate to ask because you know the guys are annoyed as shit when you ask. I'm not new to a shop though so I only asked where the gloves are, the shop towels are, and where the used shop towels go. Bam!

He had already put a coat of Aircraft strip on there and my first instruction was to rinse it off with a hose. Barely anything came off. So I went to the media blaster. Again, you're the new guy. So I didn't want to use all his media up. Plus he said, "if it's a bitch to get off, just get the top sheen off and we'll put more aircraft stripper on there". Ok boss! Later he told me he has tons of media and if I wanted to stand at the cabinet for hours I'm welcome to. Okay well damn. Now I feel stupid. I did what I was originally told and what I thought would be best for the shop. I don't like using people so... Ya. I went and bought more aircraft stripper. Then applied a 2nd coat of aircraft stripper. Waited till the guys loaded the bikes in the shop for the night and then put my wheels on the floor.

I'll tell you what though, nothing like working at a media cabinet while there's a bike braaaping on the DYNO. Who needs music in the shop when you've got that right? Dude. Small dream came true tonight. Even if I felt out of place at times. Lol. I snapped a couple of shots cus I know how y'all like photos. But don't judge the quality.

Ps. I get to go back tomorrow and finish! :)

I'd like to point out that this is what I was talking about when I said "building a relationship with someone or a shop". Instagram... Here... Everybody always has to put in their two cents and it's usually how they would have done it themselves or how they would have done it different. Blah blah braaap!

#34 · (Edited)
Another day at the shop. The media cabinet doesn't have a constant feed. Not one of the better rigs. The compressor is shared amongst the shop, so I have to stop every 10-15 minutes to the let compressor catch up. It's slow going but here are some pics. Enjoy.

After rinsing off the aircraft stripper...

During and After a few hours at the cabinet. Remember kids, I have a full-time job. I have to put my 8-10 hours in and THEN head to the shop. And they have a closing time.

Closing time. Last one in the shop. I've been blocked in by bikes.

this is awesome. This is why i wish they kept the vo-tech building open by my school. i could go and do this stuff there. Booths and all.

#36 ·
Ya the owner of the shop is being really cool. I'm not going to expect this though. And my next tab I'll be running there will be welding and DYNO... Two things I can't do or rather don't have the equipment to do. I've done *some welding in my life. Still... Super cool shop owner. And like you, I wish I had access to an open door shop.

#40 ·
Thanks man. Hopefully I'll have bare aluminum soon.

Here are some more photos since Tap Talk would only allow 5.

I spy with my little eye, my motor on the bench.

And here's a customer's sweet ass, sexy as fuck, dope ass ZX10
